Knee, hip and shoulder care for Lewisville adults

Many Lewisville patients are active adults who want to keep running, playing tennis, lifting or keeping up with their kids. Dr. Dold, who is fellowship-trained in sports medicine at NYU Langone, starts with an accurate diagnosis and treatment that matches your goals, not just your MRI.

A meniscus tear on MRI does not always mean surgery

Meniscus tears are common after age 40, and many are wear-related rather than the result of a single injury. In a large randomized trial of patients with a meniscus tear and knee arthritis, physical therapy produced similar improvement in function to surgery at 6 months, although about a third of the therapy group later chose surgery.1 Another trial found that trimming a degenerative tear did no better than a placebo procedure.2 Dr. Dold reserves surgery for tears that lock or catch, or that do not improve with rehab, and repairs the meniscus when the tear pattern allows.

Hip pain in active adults

Groin or deep hip pain with sitting, twisting or running can come from hip impingement (FAI) or a labral tear. A randomized trial found that hip arthroscopy improved hip function more than physiotherapy-led care at 12 months for people with FAI syndrome.3

Shoulder pain and rotator cuff tears

For small and medium rotator cuff tears, a 10-year randomized trial found better results after tendon repair than with physiotherapy alone.4 Not every tear needs surgery, and Dr. Dold will explain where yours fits.

Dr. Dold also treats high school and club athletes from across Lewisville ISD, whose high schools include Lewisville, Marcus, Flower Mound, Hebron and The Colony. He has cared for athletes from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS, PGA Tour, Major League Rugby and USA Gymnastics.
