Joint pain, arthritis and second opinions
Many McKinney patients come to Dr. Dold with knee or hip pain that has built up over years, or with a recommendation for surgery they want to understand better. His approach starts with what the research shows works, so you can make a clear decision.
Knee pain from arthritis or a worn meniscus
A torn meniscus seen on MRI is common in middle-aged and older knees, and it does not always need surgery. In a randomized trial of patients with a meniscal tear and knee arthritis, physical therapy gave similar improvement to arthroscopic surgery at six months, although some patients in the therapy group later chose surgery.1 Another trial found that trimming a degenerative meniscal tear was no better than a placebo (sham) operation.2 Dr. Dold uses findings like these to recommend surgery only when it is likely to help, such as a locked knee or a tear that can be repaired. See meniscus tears and knee arthritis.
When knee replacement makes sense
For advanced arthritis, knee replacement can make a large difference. In a randomized trial, patients who had knee replacement plus a non-surgical program had more pain relief and better function at one year than those who had the program alone, though with more complications.3 Dr. Dold performs robotic-assisted knee replacement, often as same-day outpatient surgery.
Anterior hip replacement
Dr. Dold performs anterior hip replacement, which goes in through the front of the hip. In a randomized trial, patients stopped using walking aids sooner after the anterior approach than after a posterior approach.4 Registry data suggest most hip replacements last 15 to 25 years.5
Sports injuries too
Dr. Dold also treats McKinney athletes of all ages for ACL tears, rotator cuff tears, hip labral tears and Achilles ruptures.

Questions from McKinney patients
Can I try injections or therapy before surgery?
Yes. Most knee and hip arthritis is treated first with exercise, weight management, bracing and injections. Dr. Dold discusses surgery when these no longer control your pain or limit your daily life.
I was told I need a knee scope. Should I get a second opinion?
Second opinions are welcome. For many worn meniscus tears, research shows physical therapy can work as well as surgery. Bring your MRI or report to your visit.
How long is recovery after hip or knee replacement?
Many patients walk the same day and go home the same day. Most return to daily activities over several weeks, and recovery continues for months. Your plan depends on your health and goals.
Does Dr. Dold accept my insurance?
Dr. Dold accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Tricare. Please call 469-850-0680 to confirm your coverage.
