What a sports medicine doctor does

Sports medicine covers injuries to bones, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments from sport, exercise and everyday activity. Some sports medicine doctors are non-surgical physicians. Dr. Dold is an orthopedic surgeon who completed a sports medicine fellowship, so the same doctor can diagnose your injury, guide non-surgical treatment and, if it is ever needed, perform the surgery. Most patients he sees do not need an operation.

Sports injuries Dr. Dold treats

Non-surgical care first

Most sports injuries are treated with a clear diagnosis, a period of protection when needed, and a structured rehab program. Star Orthopedics also offers physical therapy. When injections make sense, Dr. Dold discusses the options and the evidence behind them, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP). He has published research on PRP for cartilage problems4 and a review of treatment options for Achilles tendon ruptures.5

Young athletes

Dr. Dold sees many high school and club athletes from Frisco, Prosper, McKinney and the surrounding area. See pediatric orthopedics. Two findings from the research guide his care:

  • Prevention works. Neuromuscular warm-up and training programs lower the risk of ACL injury.1
  • Return to sport should be based on testing, not just time. Athletes who met strength and function criteria before returning had a much lower re-injury rate after ACL reconstruction,2 and young age and a return to high-risk sports are linked to a higher chance of a second ACL injury.3

From a patient

“I’m a RN working in the OR and often see Dr. Dold as well as many other surgeons operating. I’ve chosen him to do both my own hip surgery and a complicated shoulder surgery… Both surgeries had excellent outcome and faster recoveries than expected. I would recommend him to any active person and athlete…”
