Frequently asked questions

When should I see a doctor for knee pain?

See a doctor promptly if your knee gave way or popped during an injury, swells quickly, locks, cannot bear weight or cannot be straightened. Pain that lasts more than a few weeks despite rest is also worth checking.

Do I need an MRI for my knee?

Not always. Dr. Dold starts with an examination and X-rays, and orders an MRI when it will change the treatment plan, such as for a suspected ligament, meniscus or cartilage injury.

Does every knee injury need surgery?

No. Many knee conditions, including MCL sprains, runner’s knee, bursitis and many cases of arthritis, are treated without surgery. Each condition page explains when surgery is recommended.
